Art

Curriculum Map

Key Stage 3

Year 7 and 8 students receive one lesson a week. Enrichment sessions are available after school once a week, allowing students to also discover the subjects of textiles and photography.

All Key Stage 3 students follow a practical course in Art and Design that involves investigating and making images and artifacts. The work is based on a range of themes that provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Explore ideas, develop and improve their work
  • Work from first hand experience, observation, imagination and memory
  • Experiment and learn techniques and methods of working
  • Look at the work of other students, artists, designers and crafts people
  • Analyse, discuss and make judgements about their own and others’ work.

By using a broad approach to Art and Design we aim to provide an interesting, relevant and accessible curriculum. Students are encouraged to develop their curiosity and creativity in an environment that aims to be visually exciting.

Key Stage 4

Students in year 9 can opt for a creative arts subject, which is studied three times a week.

There are three option choices available to students wishing to continue their studies in Art and Design at KS4:

    GCSE Art and Design

    GCSE Art and Design provides students with a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to explore their interests in ways that are both personally relevant and developmental in nature.
    This course enables students to develop their ability to actively engage in the processes of Art and Design – to build creative skills through learning and doing, to develop imaginative and intuitive ways of working and develop knowledge and understanding of media, materials and technologies in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures.
    Assessment is by Unit 1: Portfolio of Work (Controlled Assessment) 60 per cent and Unit 2: Externally Set Task 40 per cent.
    It is a strong foundation for further progression to Art and Design related courses such as A-level Art and Design and enhanced vocational and career pathways.

    GCSE Art Textiles

    Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of textile media, processes and techniques. They will be made aware of both traditional and new media.
    Students explore the use of drawing for different purposes, using a variety of methods and media on a variety of scales. Students also explore the potential for the use of colour.
    Students will explore relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to a range of art, craft and design, from the past and from recent times, including European and non-European examples. Students’ respond to these examples through practical and critical activities that demonstrate their understanding of different styles, genres and traditions.
    Students will be aware of the four assessment objectives to be demonstrated in the context of the content and skills presented. Students are made aware of the importance of process as well as product.
    Areas of study
    Students are required to work in one or more area(s) of Textile design, such as those listed below. They may explore overlapping areas and combinations of areas:
    * fashion design
    * fashion textiles
    * costume design
    * digital textiles
    * printed and/or dyed fabric and materials
    * domestic textiles and wallpaper
    * interior design
    * constructed textiles
    * art textiles
    * installed textiles.

    Skills and techniques
    Students will be expected to demonstrate skills, as defined in Overarching knowledge, understanding and skills, in the context of their chosen area(s) of Textile design. Students will be required to demonstrate skills in all of the following:
    * awareness of the elements of textile design, such as shape, line, scale, colour, texture, pattern, contrast and/or repetition in relation to the chosen area(s) of Textile design
    * awareness of intended audience or purpose for their chosen area(s) of Textile design
    * ability to respond to an issue, concept or idea, working to a brief or answering a need in the chosen area(s) of Textile design
    * appreciation of the relationship of form and function and, where applicable, the constraints of working to a brief
    * understanding of a variety of textile methods, such as: fabric printing, mono-printing, relief printing, screen printing and laser printing; tie-dye and batik; spraying and transfer; fabric construction; stitching, appliqué, patchwork, padding, quilting and embroidery.

    Knowledge and understanding
    Students must show knowledge and understanding of:
    * relevant materials, processes, technologies and resources
    * how ideas, feelings and meanings can be conveyed and interpreted in images and artefacts created in the chosen area(s) of Textile design
    * historical and contemporary developments and different styles and genres
    * how images and artefacts relate to social, environmental, cultural and/or ethical contexts, and to the time and place in which they were created
    * continuity and change in different styles, genres and traditions relevant to Textile design
    * a working vocabulary and specialist terminology that is relevant to their chosen area(s) of Textile design.

    GCSE Art Photography

The course is split up into two units and this enables students to develop their ability to actively engage in Photography and Media. Pupils are introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of lens-based and light-based media, techniques and processes, including both traditional and new technologies.
Pupils build creative skills through learning and doing, to develop imaginative and intuitive ways of working and develop knowledge and understanding of lens based/ light based media and technologies in historical and contemporary contexts, societies and cultures.
Assessment is by Unit 1: Portfolio of Work 60 per cent and Unit 2: Externally Set Task (Controlled Assessment) 40 per cent.
